About Jim Corbett National Park

HISTORY

Jim Corbett National Park was founded in 1936, as the “Hailey National Park”. Later it has changed to “Jim Corbett National Park” in the honour of fabled hunter-“Jim Corbett” is well known for his book “The Man-Eaters of Kumaon”, and was greatly revered by local people for shooting tigers that had developed a liking for human flesh in between 1907 to 1939. Jim Corbett National Park had selected India’s first national park to start “Project Tiger” to conserve the ecosystem and wildlife, especially tigers.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Jim Corbett National Park is located at Ramnagar town in Nainital District and it’s surroundings are spread in Pauri and Nainital district. Corbett Park is famous for its wide variety of wildlife and its beautiful location at the foothill of Himalaya by the Ramganga River. With the recent inclusion of the Sonanadi Wildlife Sanctuary to the west, Corbett has grown from 520 to 1318.5 sq km.

Jim Corbett National Park is one of the majestic place for the Nature and Wildlife lovers. In this park Elephant Safari and Jeep Safari are the most favourite activities. This park is situated on the bank of Ramganga River. Forests of Sal are very famous for this area. In this park more than 600 birds, 50 mammals, and 25 reptiles’ species. MAIN WILDLIFE ATTRACTION

More commonly seen wildlife includes the wild elephant, Langur monkey (black face, long tail), rhesus macaque, peacock, and several type of deer including Chital (spotted deer), Sambars, hog deer and barking deer. There are also crocodiles, the odd-looking Gavial or Gharial, monitor lizards, wild boars and jackals. Leopards (referred to as panthers in India) are occasionally seen.

Corbett is also a birds watchers paradise, and since the creation of the Kalagarah Dam on the Ramganga River, large numbers of waterfowl have been attracted here.

COMMON FLORA OF JIM CORBETT PARK

Corbett National Park large landscape is enriched with variety of vegetation. Sal, Sheesam, Khair, Dhak, Bael, Ber are the common trees inside the park. Some other trees you can see around the park are Chir Pine Tree, Semal, Amaltas, Madaar, Teak, Bottlebrush etc. Common grasses scattered inside the park are Kasni, Bail, Narkul, Spear Grass, Khus Khus and Tiger Grass.

CORBETT PARK SAFARI ZONE

Jim Corbett National Park has divided into 5 different tourism zones for better tourism management.

Bijrani Zone: Entry from “Aamdand Gate”, Best Time to Visit: 15th October to 30th Jun. Main attraction – Bengal Tiger, Deer’s, Birds, Wild Boar, Jungle Cat, Martin, Sloth Bear, Langoor, Monkeys etc. Safari options to visit this zone are – Jeep and Elephant safari.

Jhirna Zone: Entry From: “Khar Gate”. Only this zone opens round of the year. Main attractions: Asian elephant, reptiles, birds, wild boar, deer’s, leopards and Bengal Tigers. You can visit this zone only with open jeep.

Durgadevi Zone: Entry From: “Durgadevi Gate”. Best time to visit 15th Nov to 15th Jun. The zone covers foothill area of Jim Corbett. Safari area and sighting chances are not as good as others, but idle place for bird’s watchers. You can visit this zone only with open jeep.

Dhela Zone: Entry from “Dhela Gate”. Dhela is new zone of Corbett Tiger Reserve. It opens for tourists in 2015. It also opens round of the year for tourists. Main attractions area wild elephant, Leopard, Bengal Tiger, Jungle Cat, Wild Boar, Deer’s, Hornbill and other bird species, Martin etc. You can visit Dhela zone only with open jeep.

Dhikala Zone: Entry from “Dhangari Gate”. Dhikala is the largest safari zone of Corbett Park. Best Time to visit: 15th Nov to 15th Jun. Main Attractions are Wild Elephants, Leopards, Bengal Tigers, Crocodiles, Alligators, Golden Mahasheer, Trout, Birds, Wild Boar, Martin, Otters, Jakal etc. You can visit Dhikala zone with Open Jeep, Elephant and Canter (Open Bus).

SAFARI TIMINGS:

Corbett tiger reserve provide two times safari in a day and their timings are divide in two seasons – winter season and summer season.

Winter Season Timings:

Morning Safari Time: 7:00 Am to 10:00 Am.
Afternoon Safari Time: 2:00 Pm to 5:00 Pm

Summer Season Timings:

Morning Safari Time: 6:00 Am to 9:00 Am.
Afternoon Safari Time: 3:00 Pm to 6:00 Pm.

ACCOMMODATION IN JIM CORBETT NATIONAL PARK

Corbett Tiger Reserve provides forest lodges to stay inside the Jungle. But forest lodges are very few, not accommodate more than 50 to 60 persons in a single day. Forest lodges facilities and amenities are also very basic. So almost 95% visitors stay outside the entry gate resorts, hotels and enjoy the day visit wildlife safari.
